The Wall and The Silence
I was in the West Berlin Refugee camps in 1959, before the Berlin Wall went up in 1961.
Everybody knew that East Germany was collapsing. HALF of its labor force left East Germany when they got old enough to work in the West! When the Wall went up, every other Communist country already had one.
Everybody in 1959 knew that 1) East Germany was unique in allowing people to leave without being shot, and 2) East Germany was dying because of it.
Some time ago I was watching a History Channel program about Hadrian’s Wall. The professor was talking about why the Romans built it.
He then said, “Why was the Berlin Wall built?”
He smiled and gave the Party Line: “The Berlin Wall was built to keep some people in and some people out.”
He then REPEATED it, “The Berlin Wall was built to keep some people in and some people out.”
I am the only person on earth who will correct this.
The fact that East Germany almost collapsed when it allowed its people to escape is protected by The Silence.
